Mount St. Helens Campout and hike

We had a most excellent adventure at Mount St. Helens October 10-11. We set up camp at Seacrest State Park near Castle Rock, checked out the Mount St. Helens Visitors Center across the highway, then drove 40 miles to the Johnston Ridge observatory. The plan was to have everyone watch the awesome video of the eruption on Friday so we could start hiking early Saturday morning, but we found out that the 9 adults would have to pay the $8 fee both days if we did that. (When I was last there, the fee covered you for 3 days.) So the boys got to see the video Friday and Saturday, and the staff gave us a free pass for our volunteer adult who went in with the 11 boys. Then Saturday morning, we broke into two groups for hiking. The "Falls Hike Group" went 14 miles - along Johnston Ridge toward Spirit Lake, down across the valley floor, and up toward the crater, to check out waterfalls that come out of the crater. The "Lake Hike Group" was headed for the top of Harry's Ridge, just west of Spirit Lake. The camera didn't make it to the top of the ridge, but it got some spectacular shots along the way, which are posted above.

We set lots of new records:

Longest hike by 11-year-old Scouts - 14 miles

Latest return time - 10:00 p.m.

Most Dads on an outing - 8

Most people on a campout - 20

Earliest bedtime - 8:30 p.m.

Most money spent - still collecting receipts
